What are AI automation jobs?
AI automation jobs involve building, running and improving systems that use AI to do work automatically. Common titles include AI automation engineer, AI engineer, automation or RPA developer, workflow automation specialist, AI solutions architect, AI automation consultant and test automation engineer. Demand is strong: LinkedIn ranked AI engineer the fastest-growing job in the US for 2026, with AI consultants and strategists second (LinkedIn, 2026).
The main AI automation roles
| Role | What you do | Key skills |
|---|---|---|
| AI automation engineer | Builds automated workflows that use AI models and connect business systems | Python or JavaScript, APIs, AI models, workflow tools |
| AI engineer | Builds and deploys AI models and applications | LangChain, retrieval-augmented generation, PyTorch |
| Automation or RPA developer | Builds software bots that operate applications | UiPath or Power Automate, process mapping |
| Workflow automation specialist | Builds no-code and low-code automations for business teams | Zapier, Make or n8n, process design |
| AI solutions architect | Designs how AI systems fit with existing ones | Cloud platforms, integration, security |
| AI automation consultant | Finds and plans automation opportunities for clients | Process analysis, ROI, change management |
| Test automation engineer | Automates software testing, increasingly with AI tools | Test frameworks, CI/CD, scripting |
| AI operations or MLOps engineer | Keeps AI systems running, monitored and up to date | Deployment, monitoring, cloud |
The skills listed for AI engineers are those LinkedIn reported as most common for the role.
How in demand are AI automation jobs?
LinkedIn's Jobs on the Rise 2026 list, published in January 2026, put AI engineer first and AI consultants and strategists second among the fastest-growing US roles. LinkedIn reported a median of 3.7 years of prior experience for people moving into AI engineering and 8.2 years for AI consultants and strategists (LinkedIn, 2026).
Official statistics do not yet track AI automation as its own occupation. The closest US benchmark, software developers, quality assurance analysts and testers, is projected to grow 10% from 2025 to 2035, and software developers earned a median of $135,980 in May 2025 (BLS). For consulting-side roles, see AI consulting jobs.
Are there remote AI automation jobs?
Yes, more than in many fields. LinkedIn found 26.2% of AI engineer roles were remote and 27.1% hybrid, and 30.3% of AI consultant and strategist roles were remote and 32.8% hybrid (LinkedIn, 2026). Freelance automation work, through platforms and partner directories, is often fully remote.
What jobs is AI automating?
AI is automating tasks faster than whole jobs. Data entry, routine customer questions, document processing, scheduling and first drafts are increasingly automated, which changes roles built mostly on those tasks. The McKinsey Global Institute estimates technologies available today could, in theory, automate about 57% of current US work hours, a measure of technical potential rather than a forecast of job losses (McKinsey Global Institute, 2025). The people who design, build and oversee that automation are the ones in growing demand. We look at one profession in detail in can AI replace consulting jobs.
How do you get an AI automation job?
- Learn the fundamentals. One programming language, how APIs work and how AI models behave, including their limits.
- Master one or two platforms. For example, n8n or Make for workflows, or UiPath or Power Automate for RPA.
- Build three real projects. Automate actual processes, for yourself, a small business or a nonprofit, and measure the time saved.
- Write up your results. A short case study per project with the problem, the build and the outcome.
- Get a platform certification. Vendors such as Microsoft and UiPath offer certifications that help early in a career.
- Start where you are. Automating processes in your current job is often the fastest route into the field.
Where can you find AI automation jobs?
- Job boards. LinkedIn and Indeed, searching titles such as AI automation engineer, automation developer and AI engineer.
- Company career pages. Automation platform vendors, consultancies and AI agencies hire continuously.
- Partner directories. Platforms such as Zapier, Make and UiPath list certified partners who hire and subcontract.
- Freelance platforms. Upwork and similar sites carry many automation projects, useful for building a portfolio.
The bottom line
AI automation jobs span engineering, RPA, no-code workflow building, architecture, consulting, testing and operations. Demand is high, with AI engineer and AI consultant topping LinkedIn's 2026 list, and many roles are remote or hybrid. To get in, learn the fundamentals, master a platform, build real projects and document the results. If you would rather hire than be hired, request a detailed quote for your automation project.
