Write a job description people can actually judge themselves against

Turns a hiring manager's rough brief into a job description that says what the work is, not a list of adjectives.

When to use it

Use this when a hiring manager has sent you three bullet points and a deadline. Most job descriptions describe an ideal person; this one describes the actual work, which is what good candidates use to decide whether to apply.

Opening this in Claude or ChatGPT sends the prompt with its {{PLACEHOLDERS}} still in it. Replace them with your own details before you send, or copy the prompt and fill them in first.

Here is the brief for a role we are hiring for:

Write the job description in this order.

1. THE WORK
Three to five sentences on what this person will actually spend their weeks doing. Use verbs and objects, not qualities: "rebuild the month-end close" rather than "drive financial excellence".

2. THE FIRST SIX MONTHS
What they should have done by then, stated as outcomes someone could check.

3. WHAT YOU NEED
Only the requirements someone genuinely cannot do the job without. Keep this list short. Put anything that is merely helpful in a separate NICE TO HAVE list, and keep that short too.

4. WHAT IT IS LIKE
The honest parts: the pace, the hard bits, who they work with. One or two sentences.

Rules:

- No "rockstar", "ninja", "fast-paced environment" or "wear many hats".
- No years-of-experience requirement unless the brief gives a reason for it.
- Do not mention age, family status, health, nationality or anything else unrelated to doing the work.
- If the brief does not say what the work actually is, stop and list the questions to ask the hiring manager instead of inventing duties.
